In the previous post, we read about optical illusions. Sometimes we see, hear or read something and we interpret it in our own way, but if you don’t have all the information you can get the wrong idea. It’s like looking at a picture though a little hole. You need to see the complete picture to understand it properly.

In this TV commercial for a daily newspaper from the 1980′s, this is expressed very clearly.

Our eyes can play tricks on our brain when we look at something. The brain perceives something differently to what it really is. These are called optical illusions.

If you look at this image, it looks like the circles are moving, but they are not – they are static!

January is a time for sales, this is when shops reduce the prices to sell the winter stock to make space for the new spring stock. Sometimes you can find real bargains. A bargain is something that has been reduced to a much lower price.

Today is International Diabetes Day. Diabetes is an illness that affects many adults and children but it doesn’t have to be a problem if you know how to control it.

A healthy diet is very important for diabetics because the body can’t control the way it processes the nutrients as normal. So some diabetics can control ther illness by what they eat and others have to take special medication to help the body function properly. There are two types of Diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2.

Today is Remembrance Day and we remember those who have died or have been injured in wars around the world.

People in the UK and some other countries wear red poppies as a symbol of remembrance. The reason they wear them is because after World War I ended in 1918, red poppies started growing in the field where the battles had taken place.

This week red poppies made of paper and plastic are distributed to collect money for injured and disabled soldiers. On Sunday the Queen will lead the Remembrance Sunday procession and lay a wreath of red poppies at the Centoaph War Memorial, in London.

a

Television (TV): meaning: “far sight”: Greek tele (τῆλε), far, and Latin visio, sight  Images are usually accompanied by sound. TV is a very good way to learn a language and I recommend to all of you who are learning English to put the american/english programmes in its original language so you can learn perfectly well the pronounciation. Whenever I can I put my TV in English because it is better.

I love TV but I don’t watch it too often. Please comment if you liked my post!!! :)

my eye2When you blog you should use a nickname or username that identifies you but keeps your personal details private. (This is something that we must always remember when we use the Internet) When you leave a comment on a blog you can also have an avatar (this is a symbol or image that also identifies you) but it is best not to use a real photo of yourself.

Instead you can create your own avatar, either by customizing a photo or image, or designing your own logo. Some people use cartoon images, animals or photos with special effects, another idea is to use an image of a part of your face or your foot, or hand. It’s fun to create your own avatar, and when you do it  you should make it something that relates to you in some way.

Picnik is a good website that lets you upload your own image or photo and then add special effects.

Shrink Pictures is a website that lets you make pictures smaller for avatars.

We love to watch videos about animals, they are so interesting and there are some fascinating documentaries that show us how animals live. But what is funny is to see animals doing things that we don’t expect. Watch this video of a panda and see what happens…

If you want to watch pandas live in action, then click here to go to the San Diego Zoo webcam. (But remember that in San Diego it’s 9 hours earlier than Spanish time)

Last year, we were in 6th grade and we were the oldest of Primary but now, even though we are the youngest of Secondary, we are very big now!!

I love our new teachers and our new subjects and everything although on the first day of school I was very nervous. We all got lockers and got really confused when the time to open our lockers finally came. Nobody knew how to open those lockers. Everyone was very nervous because it couldn’t open. Now I can open my locker really fast, but I still get confused with the classes.

Please comment!! :D

In our 5th Year Arts & Crafts class we have been looking at the work of Piet Mondrian. Piet Mondrian was born in the Netherlands in 1872. He died in 1944, and created about 250 paintings in his lifetime.

The paintings that Piet Mondrian is most famous for are rectangles of white and primary colors, dissected by black lines. However, he did not always paint this way. Mondrian’s first paintings showed scenes found in real life. They were done in a style similar to impressionism. As his style grew and changed, he began to use only the three primaries: red, yellow, and blue.

During World War I (1914-1919), he became friends with some other artists and together they began the new movement,De Stijl. The movement was called De Stijl because that was the name of the journal that Mondrian and his friends started. They called the movement neoplasticism and today both names are correct.
